Frequently Asked Questions

What’s your return/exchange policy?

We offer free returns and exchanges for 30 days from receipt of your order. Regardless of the issue, we’re here to help. Our goal is for you to love your Breathe in Detroit gear and be a happy customer. You can reach us at contact@breatheindetroit.com, via live chat on our website, or on Facebook Messenger. We try to reply as quickly as we can, and want the return process to be as easy as possible.

How long does it take to ship my order?

We usually get your order printed and out the door in about 2 days. If we have to get a size or item from a supplier, it may take a couple of extra days. Our stated turnaround time is 7 days, but it’s typically faster than that. When the order ships, you’ll receive a shipment confirmation and tracking information. Almost all of our packages are shipped via USPS.

Do you print your own stuff?

All of our stuff is hand-printed in the Detroit area. Most of the items we print ourselves in our own print shop. For some items, we use local shops that we’ve vetted and meet our high standards for print quality and consistency. We’re a small business and our goal is to support other small businesses in creating our products.

Tell me about fit and quality.

Fit

Most of our items fit true-to-size. Some items are designed to be more fitted than others and we try to call that out in the product description. There are some items that run a little on the smaller size - our women’s regular tee and eco-jersey pullover hoodie are a couple of examples. If you have any questions about fit, please reach out to us via email at contact@breatheindetroit.com, or on the website live chat. We can answer any questions or give you a personal recommendation based on how you like things to fit.

Quality

Of course, we’re going to say our quality is great (and it is). Our goal is to provide value to our customers. That means unique products and exceptional customer service that is beyond our price point. Here’s a few customer quotes that will say it for us:

  • “Just got my shirts and I am so in love with them. The messages give me all the feels. And then I feel the fabric...SO soft! I am so happy I found you!!”

  • “I ordered 4 items last week and inquired via their website re:shipping. Not only did they take the time to respond quickly, Cynda and team hand delivered my items on a Friday night. Each sweatshirt is perfect fitting and so comfy. The children's T is soft and adorable. And I can't wait to wear my gratitude tank. This is how you succeed. What an amazing company. Looking forward to future orders. Thank you kindly.”

  • “These shirts are fantastic! I have three muscle tanks and I wear them to yoga practice all the time. Born and raised Downriver and representing Detroit in central Illinois by wearing Breathe in Detroit shirts!”

  • “Softest shirt I own. Thanks Breathe in Detroit.”

Is your clothing ethically sourced and environmentally friendly?

Everything we do at Breathe in Detroit is a reflection of what matters to us. We only use clothing from WRAP certified suppliers (http://www.wrapcompliance.org). WRAP certification ensures a high level of environmental standards and humane working conditions. The majority of our styles also use eco-friendly fabrics that are made from organic cotton, post-consumer recycled polyester, and low-impact dyes.

We also make every effort to minimize our impact on the environment. Where possible, we’ve switched to using recycled, compostable poly mailers for the majority of our packages. This type of packaging is also lighter and easier to ship, reducing our carbon footprint even further. In our shop, we strive to minimize waste from our printing process and reuse/recycle wherever we can.

How does Breathe in Detroit “make an impact.”

We donate a percentage of revenue to select non-profits that we’ve vetted for their efficient use of funds. Many companies donate a percentage of profits, but by donating a percentage of revenue, it ensures we always have something set aside for our donation program, and we can build it into our costs. Donating a percentage of profits is not quite as transparent as you may think, as many businesses operate at a loss or a small net profit, so very little actually ends up being donated. You can see more about who we support on our giving back page.

Do you offer wholesale?

Yes, we sure do! Send us an email at wholesale@breatheindetroit.com and we’ll give you all the details.

Why did you start Breathe in Detroit?

Breathe in Detroit started a bit by accident, as part of a personal healing journey from loss and recovery. It started as a single shirt that simply said, “Breathe in Detroit.” That shirt was created to express the idea that no matter how hard things may be, or how broken we may feel, as long as we have our breath, we can find our way back. It’s also a reflection of how our hometown of Detroit has gone through a healing process of its own over the past several years, and has emerged with a new energy of growth and optimism.

When people saw those first shirts, they loved the message. The original concept slowly expanded to include more messages that we feel are important to express. Putting them on a shirt and wearing them around is a unique way to express an idea and share a thought, especially something you truly believe in. We believe in kindness, generosity, community, and a never ending search to understand ourselves. We also believe that sharing our stories, especially our challenging ones, can help others understand their own journey and promote mutual healing.

We’ve heard over and over again from our customers how one of the messages on our shirts has impacted them, had deep meaning for them, or made their day better. Ultimately, that’s why we do what we do.
